Baby sloths and baby monkeys at the Jaguar Rescue Center
Yes this is real, these super cute baby sloths cuddling with each other, sleeping all curled up right here in front of us. The Jaguar Rescue Center of Puerto Viejo takes in baby sloths whose mothers have died due to human activity (electric lines, cars, dogs, etc). They take care of them until they are ready to be released back into the wild. Same thing for the baby monkeys or monkeys rescued from people illegally keeping them as pets. The center receives all kinds of rescued animals including parrots, caimans (one was found in a hotel shower!), etc.. They do seem to be very intentional about releasing animals back into the wild, insiting that they are not a zoo but truly a rescue center with the aim to protect endangered species.
I choose to believe their good intentions and support their cause by taking their tour from a super passionate Dutch guy who moved here for his love for animals to volunteer for a month and never left. The place is a perfect place to finally see up close these animals who usually hide so high up in the trees. High dose of cuteness!
That was our day off during our permaculture course and ended with a cool chill time by the beach just down the road from Finca Tierra.
These sloths were in the highschool section, still teenagers, just hanging there without moving much!
